An Education in Financial Aid

President Obama made a politically smart move last week when he announced a three-part plan to make it easier for people to pay their student loans. The plan includes an income-based cap on monthly payments, loan consolidation, and a consumer education campaign on student financial aid. Obama had nothing to lose and everything to gain in rolling out the changes, which can be executed without the help of Congress. He can appeal to the youth voters who helped put him in office and he can beat up lawmakers Read more here

Peter Cohen responded to An Education in Financial Aid on November 9, 2011 11:45 AM

A Shared Responsibility I asked my colleague, Sandi Kirshner, our chief of public policy for higher education issues, what she thought about this question.  She had some great insights, which she posted on our FWD education blog.   Key among them were these:   Students must become smart about financial aid and college financing well prior to arriving at college.  The U.S. Department of Education now requires all colleges to post on their websites a net price calculator which Read more here

Down Payment on Broader Affordability   Before we engage in a discussion about the value of college and how to pay for it, it’s important to remind ourselves that we need a lot more people with postsecondary degrees and credentials. There is overwhelming evidence that the vast majority of new jobs require advanced skills. That reality makes postsecondary education the new gateway to the middle class in America, which means that people will likely be poor in the future if they choose Read more here

More Needs to be Done For Borrowers President Obama’s decision to implement new income based repayment standards on an expedited basis is a welcome move for students.  Until this announcement, the income-based repayment program has lacked sufficient press coverage and servicer support.  Only about 450,000 borrowers are taking advantage of the option to date, when estimates show 1.6 million borrowers are eligible.  The Administration and U.S. Department of Education should create Read more here

Costs and Priorities Are Out of Balance   As my 17-year-old son and I toured a major, state university campus this fall, we were surprised by the large, indoor water park on campus, complete with a 3-story slide and 40 person hot tub.  And this, we were told, is the smaller of the two university recreational facilities.  Earlier in the tour, the chemistry auditorium was cramped, overheated and clearly had not be renovated in decades.  Costs and priorities are out of balance in Read more here

Having to Repay Loans Is So Pre-Obama   For decades, our nation has spent money we don't have to finance things we want. Republicans have done it to finance tax breaks and military spending; Democrats to pay for discretionary spending and entitlements. The result is reckless deficit spending that is slowly bringing us to a very dangerous pass.   President Obama came to office pledging that we were done "kicking the can down Read more here

The NCLB Saga Continues

There's nothing like a congressional stage to expose the actual support (or lack thereof) of a legislative idea. When it comes to rewriting No Child Left Behind, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Chairman Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, compromised with Republicans so much that the Education Department is backing away from the bill; education-reform groups and civil-rights advocates outright oppose it. And yet he still couldn't please many in the GOP. The committee passed the bill on a Read more here

Education: A Federal Responsibility?

What is the role of the federal government in public education?  Whether it be the stick/carrot arrangement promoted through NCLB, a calmer, gentler collaboration offered through EdSec Duncan and his plans for ESEA, or the drumbeats for the outright elimination of the U.S. Department of Education we’ve heard since the creation of the U.S. Department of Education in 1979, it is a question that is asked many a time, with little room for an answer we all agree to be correct and answered Read more here

Ed Reform Power Rests with the States

The Perfect, The Good, or The Unacceptable?

Harkin (IA) negotiating against himself by weakening teacher accountability provisions before the markup even began to the reams of amendments intended by Sen. Paul (KY) to Sen. Sanders (VT) intending to place scarlet letters on the chests of any educator who didn't experience four or six years of a traditional Read more here

A Great Public School for All Children

For the past four and a half years, Eduflack has written about education reform.  What is working.  What is not.  How successful are we communicating our efforts to improve our public schools.  For the most part, I've done so from the cheap seats, observing from the sidelines, watching through the eyes of an observer, a consultant, or an advisor. This morning, ConnCAN (the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now) formally announced me as its new CEO.  This is a tremendously Read more here

"Trust"-ing Ed Accountability

At this point in time, only the truly cockeyed optimist believes that ESEA reauthorization will be moving any time soon.  After missed deadlines, political roadblocks, budget showdowns, and the enacting of executive authority, it seems a safe bet that honest to goodness, comprehensive reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act won't be a reality until 2013.But that doesn't mean we cannot focus on some of the key issues embodied in the reauthorization fight.  Chairman Read more here

Education: At Least We Aren’t the Oil Industry?

We regularly hear about what a noble profession education is.  We all can tell stories of those teachers who inspired us and those educators who placed us on the the paths of success.  We talk about how education is a top three policy issue, with voters making decisions based on education policy. And then some new data comes out to throw that conventional thinking off kilter.  Two weeks ago, the latest Gallup/PDK Poll reported that only 17 percent of Americans give our public schools Read more here
